About Encrypt File
Encryption lets you store or send a file so that only someone with the passphrase can open it. Your passphrase is turned into a 256-bit key with PBKDF2-SHA256 (600,000 iterations) and a random salt, and the file is encrypted with AES-256-GCM in authenticated chunks, so any change to the encrypted file is detected. Everything happens in your browser: neither the file nor the passphrase is sent anywhere, and this page loads no ads or third-party scripts. There is no password recovery. If you forget the passphrase, the data cannot be restored by anyone.
Frequently asked questions
What if I forget my passphrase?
The file cannot be decrypted. There is no recovery or backdoor, so store your passphrase safely.
Can I encrypt large files?
Yes. Files are processed in chunks. In browsers that support saving directly to disk, the output is written as it is produced to save memory.
How do I open the file later?
Use the Decrypt File tool on this site with the same passphrase.
What makes a good passphrase?
Use at least four random words or 14 or more mixed characters, and do not reuse a password from another account.
