About Number to Words

Writing an amount in words is easy to get wrong outside your own language. This tool follows each language's rules rather than gluing words together: Arabic numbers agree with the counted noun (دينار واحد، ثلاثة دنانير، أحد عشر ديناراً، مئة دينار), Russian nouns decline after numbers (рубль, рубля, рублей) and feminine units take одна and две, Spanish says “un millón de euros” and “veintiuna liras”, German writes “ein Euro” but “zwei Euro”, and Turkish never adds a plural after a number. Each currency has the right minor unit, including 1,000 fils to the Jordanian dinar. Whole numbers up to 999 trillion are supported, along with negatives and decimals read digit by digit or, where a language does so, as a number. Cardinal numbers come from the open-source n2words library, checked and corrected where needed. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the result on a cheque or invoice?

Yes, the wording follows standard grammar for each language. As with any legal or financial document, read it once before you sign.

Why does Arabic write 101 as “مئة دينار ودينار واحد”?

In Arabic, one and two come after the noun, so an amount ending in 01 or 02 is written as the round part followed by the remaining dinar or dinars. This is the form used in careful written Arabic.

Is 1,234 one thousand two hundred thirty-four or a decimal?

A single separator followed by three digits is read the way your page language usually writes numbers, and a note says so. Write 1,234.0 or 1 234 to make your meaning unambiguous.

How large can the number be?

Up to 999,999,999,999,999 with up to 15 decimal places. Larger numbers are rejected rather than spelled out incorrectly.
