About File Hash Checker

A cryptographic hash is a fingerprint of a file: any change, even a single bit, produces a completely different value. Download sites often publish SHA-256 checksums so you can confirm a file was not damaged or tampered with. This tool reads the file in chunks inside your browser, so even very large files are handled without uploading anything. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are recommended. SHA-1 is offered only to compare older published checksums; it is no longer collision-resistant and must not be relied on for security. Unlike the HMAC tool, these are unkeyed checksums.

Frequently asked questions

Which algorithm should I use?

Use the one the publisher lists, preferably SHA-256 or SHA-512.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and hashed in your browser.

Why is SHA-1 marked as legacy?

Two different files with the same SHA-1 hash can be created deliberately, so it only proves accidental integrity, not security.
